Description of JPN: Noragi by Sadako Fukui

This book by Sadako Fukui explains the history of Noragi, Japanese workwear traditionally used by farmers. Fukui aims to provide a record of about a hundred years of the craft, from the beginning of the Meiji era to 1965. To make Noragi, a single kimono can be remade and thickened by sewing together rags and being reinforced with stitching. Over a lifetime, as clothes get worn down and damaged through hard work, they gain new life as they are remade. The love that goes into these clothes as they change over time through workers hands provides a lens to explore the traditional culture of farmers and Japanese elders. Fukui covers the significance of this craft in the lives of women in rural areas, in work and work culture, and how the practice differs between regions. This craft is a storyteller of the dialogue and evolution that has taken place through major historical changes, and in this book Fukui gives the storyteller a modern voice.
