Okawahara, Handkerchief with Yutan Zodiac, Horse

Wind, wrap, sling, tie, decorate, layout. These colorful handkerchiefs dyed using the nori-kome technique are useful and versatile. Made in Japan from lightweight cotton, they are handy to carry with you to use as a towel, napkin, scarf, headband, or accessory in your pocket.

Nori-zome is a dyeing technique that utilizes rice paste to create intricate designs. By applying the paste to the cloth, artisans block out specific patterns. When the fabric is dyed, the protected areas remain the original color of the cloth, resulting in sharp, detailed imagery.

With a legacy spanning over 200 years, Okawahara preserves the ancient nori-zome technique to honor the traditional dyeing culture of Kagawa Prefecture. By blending this meticulous craftsmanship with modern innovation, they continue to produce vibrant, high quality pieces that bring Japanese heritage into the contemporary world.
