Description of Tenugui, Yuzen-Zome, Pomegranate

A tenugui is a common household item in Japan. These versatile cloths can be used as anything from washcloths, to headbands, to simply for decoration.

These humble cloths date back to the Heian era (794-1192 AD). Worn for summer festivals, kendo practice and even used as props for storytellers, tenugui are an important part of Japanese culture and history.

Yuzen-zome is a freehand resist-dyeing technique used to create large pictorial designs. Unlike many traditional forms of textile dyeing where patterns are repetitive by nature, yuzen-zome allows artists to apply the resist paste in a more painterly fashion. The technique allows the use of multiple colors and has been the preferred dyeing process in designing kimono fabrics.

Tenugui edges are purposely seamless for better hygiene and quick drying. After a few washes, you may find that the cloth has frayed. Use a pair of scissors to trim the loose threads. The more you use the cloth, the more the edges will stop fraying due to the tightening of the fabric.

** If you would like the edges of your tenugui to be finished, we can hem the edges at an additional cost of $2.00 per tenugui.

Add Tenugui Hem Fee to cart when requesting edges to be hemmed.
