Marugame Uchiwa fans have a rich history in Japan: from souvenirs for the pilgrims during the early Edo period to a source of supplementary income for low-ranking samurai, for the past 400 years, they have continued to hold an important place in Japanese culture. Traditionally characterized by a single bamboo handle and bamboo framework, it is well-known that bamboo fans incorporating the traditional skills of craftsmen are considered to have more character, unlike their mass-produced resin-made cousins.
These fans are revered throughout Japan as a successful local industry, and artisans continue to develop folk-art fans and elaborately designed interior fans to this day. In 1997, Marugame Uchiwa fans were registered as Japanese Traditional Crafts.
