These elegant incense holders come with a Japanese tombo dama glass bead that can be used to hold incense in several different ways. Tombo dama means "dragonfly's eye" and only hand made beads can carry the name, meaning that each bead is unique. Glass beads were brought to Japan through the Silk Road during the Nara period in the 700s and were popular late 12th century, when they fell out of fashion. The beads became popular again in the Edo period in the 17th century, and their craftsmanship has been practiced and refined in Japan since.
